What is a cortical response?
If you have seen a video described as producing a strong or weak “cortical response”, it is worth knowing precisely what that means — and, just as importantly, what it does not.
The plain definition
The cortex is the outer layer of the brain, and it is where most perception happens — seeing, hearing, and processing language. A cortical response is simply the pattern of activity across that layer while someone perceives something. When a person watches a video, different cortical regions respond at different moments: areas handling motion, areas handling faces, areas handling speech.
Researchers measure this with fMRI, which records activity across the whole cortex while a participant watches. That produces a second-by-second picture of which regions responded, and how strongly.
How a model predicts it without a scanner
Once you have recordings of many people watching many videos, you can train a model on the relationship between the two: this is what was on screen, and this is how the cortex responded. A model that has learned that relationship well can then estimate the likely average response for a new video that no one has ever watched in a scanner.
That is what neuro-viral does. It takes the video's visual, audio and language streams, and predicts the average viewer's second-by-second response across 360 cortical regions. No viewer is measured; the prediction comes from the video itself.
Why this is useful to a creative team
Most creative feedback is either opinion (“the middle feels slow”) or lagging data (a completion rate, after you have paid for reach). A predicted cortical response sits in between: it is specific about where in the timeline something changes, and it is available before publication.
Practically, that means you can point at a stretch of your own video and ask a better question than “does this feel right?” You can ask “why does the model score this stretch lower than the one before it, and is that a deliberate choice?” Sometimes a quiet stretch is intentional. Sometimes it is an edit nobody noticed.
What it cannot tell you
This is where honesty matters more than enthusiasm.
- It is not a forecast of results. A predicted cortical response is not a prediction of views, watch time, conversions or revenue. Those depend on distribution, targeting, timing, offer and audience — none of which a model of the video can see.
- It is an average, not your audience. The prediction reflects a typical viewer, not your particular subscribers or customers.
- It covers the cortex. Regions associated with reward, emotion and memory sit deeper in the brain and are not modelled.
- It is a prediction. Like any model, it has error, and it is more reliable on material resembling what it was trained on.
The honest framing
A predicted cortical response is a creative filter. It helps you find the moments in a video worth another look, and it lets you compare a revised cut against the original on the same basis. It replaces neither your judgement nor a real audience test — it just means you arrive at both with better questions.
